Church of Saint Brigid Clergy
Monsignor Douglas P. Clancy, Pastor
Monsignor Clancy was born in Waterbury, CT and moved to Middlebury the year following his birth. He began his studies for the priesthood at St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield and completed them at St. Mary’s Seminary, Baltimore, MD. Ordination by Archbishop John F. Whealon took place at St. Joseph Cathedral on May 22, 1971. After ordination, Fr. Clancy was assigned to St. Francis of Assisi Church in New Britain where he served until 1978. Epiphany Church, Cheshire was to be Fr. Clancy’s second assignment. During his years of service there, he was appointed Dean of the Cheshire-Naugatuck Deanery and was elected for a term to the Archdiocesan Personnel Board.
Fr. Clancy made his first appearance in Elmwood when he was assigned to St. Brigid during the Pastorate of Msgr. McMahon in 1983. Fr. Clancy was named Co-Pastor of St. Brigid’s with Fr. Richard Sherer in February of 1987. His years at St. Brigid saw his appointment as Dean of the Suburban Hartford Deanery and Director of the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal; a position he held until 2004.
Archbishop Daniel Cronin assigned Fr. Clancy to St. James Church in Manchester in 1994 where he served as pastor until June 2007. During his tenure at St. James, Pope John Paul II elevated Fr. Clancy to the rank of Prelate of Honor with the title of Reverend Monsignor on August 22, 2000. Investiture took place at St. Joseph’s Cathedral on December 16 of that year.
In June 2007, Archbishop Henry J. Mansell appointed Monsignor Clancy to St. Mary’s Church in Newington. His stay in Newington was shortly followed by his appointment as Pastor of St. Brigid’s in May of 2009 with the additional appointment as Pastor of St. Helena on July 30th of that same year. Monsignor Clancy presently serves on the Pastors’ Advisory Council for the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal and on the Board of Trustees for the Foundation and Advancement of Catholic Schools.
